Moses and I

Moses is one of my favorite biblical figures. It’s because I see myself so much in him. Especially when coming to his anxiety and fear. Do you remember when God called you to something and it terrified you to do it? Maybe that time is now? You wonder why God would choose you for the task. Moses went through that.

(God said) So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt." But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" - Exodus 10-11

Then you wonder how effective you’ll be… And you make excuses on why you shouldn’t do the task. All because you feel inadequate.

Moses answered, "What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, 'The Lord did not appear to you'?" - Exodus 4:1

Then fear kicks in, right? You’re suddenly consumed with thoughts of all your weaknesses. Especially those bigger ones you have a hard time overcoming.

Moses said to the Lord, "Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue." - Exodus 4:10

The thing is, is we are inadequate. We are inadequate by ourselves. But like with Moses, God wasn’t asking us to do the task by ourselves. When faced with a daunting and difficult task, we aren’t alone.

And God said, "I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain." - Exodus 3:10‭-‬12

Please remember that God does not ask us to go where he has not provided the means to help. You don’t want to doubt God and plead with him to let you out of your mission as Moses did…

The Lord said to him, "Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say." But Moses said, "Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else." - Exodus 4:11-‬13

Is it not the Lord?! He knows everything about you! Your strengths, weaknesses, fears, doubts, and inadequacies. He didn’t make a mistake in choosing you for the task! He is with you and will help you!

He was with Moses, provided miracles, and sent Aaron alongside him… All of these were provisions to help Moses along the way in completing the task that God called him to. And you know what? Moses did what he was called to do!

It’s easy to focus on our weaknesses. But if what God is calling you to do incorporates them, you better believe he’ll help you. He’ll provide words, strength, courage, and ability where and when needed. Don’t hide behind your inadequacies, but look beyond them to the great resources available. Allow God to use your unique contributions. After all, he doesn’t call the qualified but qualifies the called.
