When Truth and Feelings Collide

One of the lessons I’ve learned as a Christian is that my feelings are real, but they are not always right.

There have been times when I felt abandoned, but God’s Word reminded me He would never leave me nor forsake me.

There have been times when I wanted to hold on to hurt, but God’s Word called me to forgive.

There have been times when I was afraid, worried, or discouraged, and God’s Word reminded me to trust Him.

The truth is, there are parts of Scripture that make me stop and think, “Lord, that’s not what I would have chosen.” Yet faith isn’t about agreeing with God only when His Word matches my feelings. Faith is trusting that His wisdom is greater than my own.

That’s why Proverbs 3:5-6 has become such an important passage to me:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Notice what Solomon doesn’t say. He doesn’t say, “Trust your heart.” He says to trust the Lord with your heart.

There is a difference.

My heart can be hurt, afraid, impatient, emotional, or confused. God’s Word remains true regardless of how I feel in the moment.

That doesn’t mean our feelings don’t matter. God created our emotions. The Psalms are full of people pouring out their hearts before Him. But feelings make poor foundations. They were never meant to lead us. God’s truth was.

When my feelings and Scripture agree, that’s wonderful.

When my feelings and Scripture disagree, Scripture wins.

Not because I understand everything God does, but because I trust the One who said it.

As believers, we should always be asking, “What does God’s Word say?” before we ask, “What do I feel?”

Because truth doesn’t change when our emotions do.

Lord,
Thank You for giving us Your Word as a firm foundation. Help us to trust You more than our own understanding. When our emotions are loud, remind us that Your truth remains steady. Teach us to seek Your wisdom first and to build our lives on what You have said rather than what we happen to feel in the moment.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
